From 'Outsider' to 'Family' - My PEF Internship

Initial Thoughts:

Before starting my job, I was very nervous. I wasn't sure what to expect. The thought of being an intern made me think of the original duties of an intern (going to get coffee, filing meaningless documents, running back and forth to relay messages for your boss, then finally more coffee runs.) When I started my job at PEF, I was treated the exact opposite of an intern. I met everyone I would be working with and learned more about them. They all seemed very open and friendly. I felt like I was a part of the family instead of being an outsider.

Skills:

So far at PEF, I've learned great communication skills. Working in an office where everyone is spaced out showed me the importance of having, and frequently checking, your own professional email address. If a colleague needs you, the best way is through email or text. There has only been one event that I've missed because of not checking my email. Since then, I try to keep it open and available at all times.

To the students who are interested in joining STEP-UP, what's stopping you? This is a great opportunity to gain professional skills. The process seems grueling at first, but before you know it, you'll be at your new job making valuable connections.

Tips for Success:

1. Always check your email and voicemails for information about job interviews

2. Be early for your interviews (Early is on time, On time is late)

3. If you're working in an office, always bring a pen and pad to take notes

4. Learn the company's parking lot locations and information on parking validation and gate codes

5. Always take a lunch break or at least 30 minutes for yourself

6. Talk to your employer about your schedule. Remember that gas is expensive, so if you can work more hours in a day, but less days in the week, then take that opportunity

7. If you have tattoos, ask the company about its tattoo policy

8. Stay in contact with your employer. If there is a conflict with your schedule or an emergency, then make sure they are aware of the situation.
